Abstract

This research is motivated by limitations in communicating with children with speech impairments in Lunggaian Village, who communicate using nonverbal communication. Communication is different from people in general. The purpose of this study was to determine the pattern of communication carried out by children with speech impairments to their families and their environment. The theory used is the Symbolic Interaction Theory. This theory is a theory that looks at how a person can move and act based on the meaning given to others. This theory has three important ideas, namely Self (Self), Mind (Thought), and Society (Society). The method used is a qualitative descriptive method. Based on the results of the study, the communication applied by speech impaired children uses nonverbal communication such as sign language, body gestures, facial expressions and even using writing. In this case, the theory of symbolic interaction takes an important role in the process of communication and interaction carried out by speech-impaired children, because it relates to the way of communication and interaction between individuals in this case occurs in children with speech impairments by involving communication symbols.
