Abstract
This study aims to examine the symbolic meaning of the Meruboh sumbai or Sumbang tradition in the marriage customs of the Semende tribal community in Sugihan Village, Muaradua Kisam District, South OKU Regency. This research is a field research with the type of qualitative research,using purposive sampling with predetermined criteria, informantsresearch again found 3 people.The collection of research data obtained fromobservation, interview and documentation. Data analysis techniques by reading, studying, studying, reducing data, which will then be written in the form of a descriptive analysis report. And test the validity of the data withData source triangulation. The results of the study: (1) each symbol in the tradition of Meruboh Sumbai or Donate basicallyhave meaning, even sacredly interpreted by the local community. Being an important tradition and must be carried out before the wedding ceremony, the symbols that are always there are: sugarcane soaring the sky, betel leaves as wide as "jebang", snake tears, tiger eyelashes, buffalo eggs, goose eggs as long as a lake, and woven rice that has strong desire or determination. Semban which has the meaning of blood ties, and sugar cane which means the customary rules of Sumbai and Donate. (2) Some of the existing stages also have a sacred meaning for the local community, including the netek semban stage which has the meaning of breaking the blood ties between two brothers, the sugarcane cutting stage which aims to destroy the sumbai or discord which is interpreted by changing the existing rules. previously set.
